Most dive enquiries now land on WhatsApp, often at night, often in another language. Before you automate any of it, you need to know which WhatsApp you are building on. The official WhatsApp Business API protects your number and your customer history. Unofficial tools put both at risk. Here is the plain version, written for a dive-centre owner, not an engineer.

There are three WhatsApps, and only one is safe to automate

It helps to separate them clearly, because they are easy to confuse and the difference matters a lot for a busy centre.

  • The consumer app. The green WhatsApp on your phone. Fine for chatting with mates, not built for a business and impossible to automate properly.
  • The WhatsApp Business app. A free app with a catalogue, quick replies and labels. Better, but it lives on one phone, one staff member holds it, and it cannot run a 24/7 AI on top.
  • The WhatsApp Business API. Meta's official platform for software to send and receive messages on your business number. No phone tied to a desk, multiple staff can work the same number, and approved software can answer automatically. This is the one a dive centre should build on.

Official API versus unofficial tools, and why your number is at stake

Plenty of cheap chatbot tools promise WhatsApp automation without the official API. They quietly log in as if they were your phone, using an unofficial workaround. It can look identical on day one. The risk is that Meta actively detects and bans these methods, and the ban lands on your number, not on the tool's.

For a dive centre, your WhatsApp number is on your shopfront, your dive flags, every listing and every returning diver's phone. Losing it is not a minor outage. The official WhatsApp Business API is the only route that keeps the number yours, keeps your conversation history yours, and stays inside Meta's rules so there is no ban risk hanging over the booking season.

What a Meta Tech Provider is, and why it matters to you

To use the official API, your number has to be connected to it through an approved business. Meta calls that approved business a Tech Provider. It is the company Meta has vetted to set up and run the official connection on a centre's behalf.

What is the WhatsApp Business API?

Will using the API put my dive centre's number at risk of a ban?

What is a Meta Tech Provider?

Do I keep my own WhatsApp number?
